The Seminole Heights Sunday Morning Market will be an opportunity for a neighborhood gathering; for family and friends to meet and mingle, for fun in the sun, for fresh shopping and the opportunity to support and buy local.

The Mission of the Seminole Heights Sunday Morning Market is to serve as a community-gathering place where local farmers and producers can offer fresh agricultural and related products to generate a sense of local pride and further economic development of the neighborhood of Seminole Heights.  Additionally, local artists will have the opportunity to showcase their efforts and sell their wares.

Check Presented to Cleveland Elementary

On November 18, 2009 at 10:30am the Old Seminole Heights Neighborhood Watch and the Seminole Heights Foundation, Inc. presented the first check from the Jane Castor Academic Fund to Cleveland Elementary School. The Chief of Police for the City of Tampa and namesake for the fund, Jane Castor was on hand to present the check to Peter Russo, the Principle of Cleveland Elementary School. The school is located at 723 E. Hamilton. The Old Seminole Heights Neighborhood Watch group has raised $700.00 for the Jane Castor Academic Fund over the past month and the money will be presented to the school for use at the discretion of the principle. The Old Seminole Heights Neighborhood Watch will continue to raise money for this fund and will accept donations through the Seminole Heights Foundation, Inc. The date for this presentation was selected because it is the date for the Great American Teach-In. The Great American Teach-In allows members of the business community to discuss career goals and opportunities with the students at our local schools. Encouraging the youth of Seminole Heights to reach their highest potential will have a positive impact on the sustainability of Seminole Heights.

Cleveland Elementary recently celebrated their 80^th year in service with a restoration of the brick building that houses the school. The ingenuity and talents of the teachers at this school gained recognition this year by having one of the teachers named as the Florida Teacher of the Year. Megan Allan is a fourth-grade teacher who selected for her unorthodox teaching styles and many hours spent outside the classroom in various community service endeavors. Cleveland Elementary serves a multi-ethnic school population that consists of students from a predominantly economically disadvantaged community.

Teams of 4-6 people can register to participate, the donation to participate is $50.00 per team. We have selected 15 locations for the teams to hunt for in the Seminole Heights area. After completing registration, each team will be given a clue to find their first location. Once that location has been ‘found’, the team will receive a clue for the next location and the process will continue until all 15 locations have been found. The team that finds all 15 locations in the best time will win the prize. Mark your calendars to join the fun - Saturday, November 21. All proceeds will benefit the Seminole Heights Foundation.

SEMINOLE HEIGHTS - An as-yet-unnamed neighborhood school will receive a donation in November from the Jane Castor Academic Fund.

The fund was created by the nonprofit Seminole Heights Foundation to benefit area schools and recognize newly appointed Tampa Police Chief Jane Castor.

Castor, who is the city’s first female police chief, began her 25-year career with the police department patrolling in Old Seminole Heights.

“I’m certainly honored by the Seminole Heights Foundation,” Castor said. “I’m very close to Seminole Heights. I think it’s wonderful they should recognize me in this way.”

The foundation’s president, Christie Hess, said a check will be presented to a Seminole Heights school Nov. 18 during the Great American Teach-In. It will be up to school officials to decide how they want to use the money, Hess said.

Seminole Heights Vision Plan

From the City of Tampa Land Development Office: The next Greater Seminole Heights Plan project meeting will be held on Wednesday, November 4, 2009 & Wednesday, November 18, 2009 from 6:00 – 8:00 pm at the Ragan Park Community Center, 1200 East Lake Avenue. Please note that both meetings are “Wrap-Up” sessions which will focus on overall development standards.

The meeting held Wednesday, November 4 was very informative and provided a glimpse of what the future could hold for Seminole Heights. Renderings of the ideas provided by the attendees of the last hands-on workshop to develop or redevelop 4 parcels of commercial real estate along both Nebraska and Florida Avs were presented. The city staff modified the ideas to fit into ‘real world’ situations and the outcome is very promising. More discussion is needed to further define the guidelines necessary to provide workable solutions to address the concerns of providing residential serving businesses along the commercial corridors within Seminole Heights.
